How Climate Action Is Built Into The Business

Anyone who cares for plants, or keeps a garden, knows very well how positive they can be on our sense of well-being. The connection we form with our plants enhances the connection we have with the natural world that surrounds us. To that end, it is my opinion that, people who care deeply about plants, they also care deeply about the environment. I believe this with my entire heart and soul. I'm no different. Furthermore, I am extremely conscious that we need to do more to ensure that the negative impact that we make, is minimised.

When I started this business, one of the most important things on my mind was to minimise the negative impact that my business has on the environment and to look at ways I can offset the impact caused by the things I cannot change.

While I can't (yet) ensure that the airplanes and trucks used by the various transport companies to deliver your plants to you are fuelled with something other than dirty diesel or rocket fuel, there are certainly things I can do.

My commitment to myself, my customers and my community, is to always put climate action at the heart of everything I do in this business. This matters to me. It feels like the very least I can do.

Below are a few of the ways, I am achieving this.

For Every Order That Is Placed, A Tree Is Planted

Yep, you heard it right. No joke. No gimmick. No bull.

One of the best things we can do to keep our temperatures from rising above 1.5C is to plant trees. They are also crucial in preventing ecological collapse. So Rare Roots Of Joy has signed up to Ecologi, a not-for-profit enterprise focused on funding reforestation and carbon reduction projects, including one reforestation project right here in Australia. You can read more about them here

The way it works, is that every time an order is placed, Rare Roots of Joy buys a tree through Ecologi. This is then used in one of their important projects. The more orders that are placed, the more trees that are bought.

The purchasing of these trees occurs on a monthly basis, so you can be assured that, as a customer, the impact we are having together, is immediate.

Compostable or Recyclable Packaging

Rare Roots of Joy is committed to working towards using packaging and posting solutions that are either fully compostable or fully recyclable. This includes everything, right down to the packing tape.

I confess, we aren't completely there yet. But we are committed to making it happen so you'll be able to toss the lot straight into your compost bins, worm farms or your curb side recycling bin.
